Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get there?

If you are driving, Ashridge Great Barn is 15 minutes off the A30 if you’re coming from Exeter or 40 minutes from Barnstaple if you’re approaching form the North. Please see the top of the page for the postcode, what3words, map and directions.  If you have any trouble give us a ring on 07562260052.

The closest train stations are Copplestone and Morchard Road, both accessed through Exeter St Davids.  The train station at Okehampton might also be worth considering depending on where you are staying.  The closest bus stop is in the square in North Tawton.  Taxis are available (and listed below) but we advise booking in advance as they are unlikely to be available on short notice.

What should I wear?

Do dress for the weather – the Great Barn has heating but is still a barn at the end of the day! Hopefully it’s a beautiful day and you’re likely to be heading to the gardens for a wedding ceremony or drinks reception so worth bearing in mind that you’ll be on grass when selecting your footwear.  Although the Great Barn itself is more level there are uneven areas so we suggest that your tallest sky scraper heels are not your first choice.

Do you have disabled access?

There is wheelchair access to the gardens and the majority of the Great Barn, including facilities.  That said, this is a farm so the off-road models cope better! We have a list of accessible accommodation nearby so do get in touch if that’s of interest.

Where can I stay?

The Ashridge Great Barn is located between Dartmoor and Exmoor with camp sites, holiday cottages and B and B’s aplenty.  At the bottom of the page you will find a map showing the general local area, a list of accommodation by location and a downloadable spreadsheet of nearby options.

What is there to do?

Lots! Other than Dartmoor itself there are lots of activites and towns to explore nearby as well as a wide variety of conservation sites both wildlife and heritage. See the list below for specific links and recommendations.

What local facilities are there?

This is a rural area so may not have the range of facilities you are used to.  In the local shops and services section below is a quick reference list – do feel free to contact us for more specific requests.

What are the roads like?!

The short answer is they vary! We’re very lucky to be only 15 minutes off the A30 so if you’re coming from the south the roads are good with only the last 15 minutes of your journey on smaller lanes.  If you’re coming from the north the roads are smaller and in variable condition – please drive carefully!

There are two entrances to the farm, one of which will have been chosen as the guest entrance by the couple.  Both drives are unpaved, we recommend that you keep your speed under 15mph and if you are worried about the clearance on your car do contact us to discuss the best one to arrive by.  We ask that campervans in particular look out for signage as there is a fragile bridge on the Carriage drive.
